England claim a dramatic victory as Sri Lanka batting collapses
England claimed a dramatic victory in the first Test after Sri Lanka was shot out for 82 after the last eight wickets fell for 49 runs in 12 overs. Graeme Swann (4/16) and Chris Tremlett (4/40) took four wickets apiece to set up a win by an innings and 14 runs at Sophia Gardens on Monday. This is Sri Lanka's fourth lowest total and England took 1-0 lead in the three-match nPower Test series. England claimed victory in the final session after the Test was meandering to end in a draw. All the Sri Lanka’s batsmen failed except Thisara Perera, who top-scored with 20. England had declared on 496-5 as soon as Ian Bell completed his century and the test was poised for a draw. Bell remained unconquered at 103 (159 balls, 11 fours and one six) and Eoin Morgan finished on 14 not out.England gained a slender lead of 96, but an improbable home victory was set up after Tremlett removed Tharanga Paranavitana, who edged a catch to England captain Andrew Strauss. Tremlett struck again after eight balls accounting for Tillakaratne Dilshan taking a catch off his own bowling. Dilshan referred the decision to the 3rd umpire, but was upheld after replays showed the ball nicked his glove. Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene stayed till the tea interval, leaving Sri Lanka 63 behind with a minimum 39 overs remaining. Tremlett struck with the fifth ball of the final session, after Jayawardene edged to Strauss at slip. Thilan Samaraweera played on off Graeme Swann for a duck, and Swann then claimed the key wicket of Sangakkara, who edged to Strauss. Sri Lanka were in dreep trouble at 43/5, after losing two wickets without adding a run. Farveez Maharoof got out for a duck off Swann and Prasanna Jayawardene then fell for 3 to Tremlett. Swann trapped Rangana Herath lbw for 3, but Perera was temporarily reprieved when a Stuart Broad delivery went off his handle, only for Ian Bell to collide with sub fielder Stewart Walters while trying to take the catch. In Broad’s next over Perera was brilliantly caught by a diving Bell at short-leg and a thrilling win was accomplished when the last man, Suranga Lakmal, was caught in the slips by Alastair Cook off Broad.
