Broad steers Engliand to a thrilling 6 run victory
This World Cup has conjured a lot of see-saw battles and England has played a big role. Their matches against India and Ireland were shining examples. But in the match against South Africa they manage to wrest control of the game and win by six runs in a thrilling encounter at Chennai. England bowled out South Africa for 165 chasing a paltry total of 172, with a lethal combination of reverse swing bowling from Anderson and the guile of Swann's spin. Stuart Broad's 4 for 15 ensured his side's victory including two wickets in four balls after Dale Steyn's 31-ball 20 had threatened to take the match away from England. Chasing an easy target of 172, South Africa coasting along the run-chase after an opening stand of 63 between Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla. The middle order steadied the innings reaching 124 for 3 but quickly lost 3 wickets without adding a run. Earlier South Africa gambled with bowling by opening with Peterson and it paid off. Reeling at 15 for 3, Ravi Bopara and Jonathan Trott consolidated the innings with useful contributions of 60 and 52 respectively. Imran Tahir once again bowled with an accurate line strangling the England batsmen with 4 for 38.
